The New Audi A5 Models: Modern Sportiness Meets Premium Proportions
> Audi Design redefines the Sedan and makes the Avant even more attractive
> Technology meets comfort in the interior with new electronic architecture
> First combustion-engine version to enable partially electric driving thanks to drivetrains with MHEV plus technology
16 July 2024 - Audi is introducing the new A5 family, marking a new chapter in its mid-size segment. Thirty years after the first Audi A4, the latest Audi A5 impresses with its refined design and sporty essence in both Sedan and Avant styles. The interior features a spacious design with digital displays, enhancing vehicle interaction. Efficient, partially electrified engines and exciting S models complete the lineup.
Since 2024, AUDI AG has restructured its vehicle naming system, using even numbers for electric models and odd numbers for combustion engines. With this change, the new generation of the Audi A4 will be called the Audi A5 and produced in Neckarsulm. The A5 is available in four variants: A5 Sedan, S5 Sedan, A5 Avant, and S5 Avant. These models are the first to launch on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).
The new Audi A5 models are larger and come with expanded standard equipment, placing them in the upper mid-size segment. The user experience is enhanced by the 1.2 version of the E³ electronic architecture. Optional equipment is available in various packages.
Dynamic and Muscular Exterior Design
The redesigned Audi A5 family features a powerful, clean design with a long wheelbase, large wheels, and a low, sporty body, embodying progressive dynamism and premium standards. The Sedan’s compact greenhouse arches smoothly to the rear, flowing into a shallow rear window and a short tailgate with a striking spoiler lip.
The new rear hatch, which opens with the rear window, provides easy access to the luggage compartment, introducing a new sedan concept for Audi. In the Avant model, the dynamic roofline integrates seamlessly into a roof spoiler over the flat rear window, with steeply raked D-pillars enhancing its dynamic side profile.
The front boasts a wide, flatter Singleframe grille with a three-dimensional honeycomb structure and slim, precisely drawn headlights, creating a striking look. The "soft nose" design allows the hood to align flush with the front end. Powerful blisters over the wheels, reminiscent of the Audi Urquattro, highlight Audi's design DNA.
The rear combines sporty design with advanced technology, featuring sculptural geometry and a three-dimensional light strip for visual dynamism. Base models also include a modern bumper design with a dark diffuser and high-quality rectangular exhaust tips.
New Standards in Digital Light
The Audi A5 family features digital daytime running lights with LED technology at the front and second-generation digital OLED rear lights with around 60 segments per panel. These lights enhance car-to-x communication and road safety, such as with the new communication light. Dynamic lighting effects when unlocking and leaving the vehicle reflect Audi's light DNA, while the active digital light signature adds a sense of liveliness. The three-dimensional headlights and rear lights offer optional digital light signatures, bridging the physical and digital worlds.
Technology Meets Comfort in the New Interior
The interior design of the new Audi A5 focuses on four key features:
1. Human-Centric Design: Geared towards user needs.
2. Digital Stage: Audi MMI displays in clear view of the driver and front passenger.
3. Material Driven Design: Ensures a spacious feel and high comfort.
4. Visual Clarity: Clear layout and easy operation for an overview in all situations.
Additionally, the optional dynamic interaction light enhances interaction between the car and its occupants.
Audi MMI Panoramic Display and Head-up Display
The new Audi A5 features an enhanced operating concept with the E³ electronic architecture, boosting interaction and connectivity. It integrates seamlessly into digital ecosystems, offering a personalized experience. The slim, curved Audi MMI panoramic display includes an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit screen and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. An optional 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display is integrated into the dashboard. The configurable head-up display, now more advanced, allows drivers to control vehicle and infotainment functions directly from the display.
Advanced Hybrid System MHEV Plus
The new MHEV plus system in the Audi A5, based on a 48-volt electrical system, enhances performance and reduces CO2 emissions. It supports the combustion engine, allowing for partial electric driving that cuts fuel consumption.
Compared to a standard MHEV system, this system offers significant CO2 and fuel consumption reductions: up to 10 g/km or 0.38 l/100 km in the 2.0 TDI (150 kW, front-wheel drive/quattro) and up to 17 g/km or 0.74 l/100 km in the V6 3.0 TFSI (270 kW, quattro).
The powertrain generator (PTG) can add up to 18 kW (24 PS) of electric power and recuperates energy during braking at up to 25 kW, allowing for limited electric maneuvering and parking. The electric air conditioning compressor enables cooling even when the engine is off.
Additionally, the integrated brake control system (iBRS) decouples the brake pedal from the hydraulics, using regenerative braking for initial deceleration. Friction brakes are used only when more braking force is needed, maintaining consistent brake feel.
Motors at Market Launch
The Audi A5 family offers a range of efficient engines catering to various needs, from entry-level to high-performance models.
- Entry-Level Engine: The 2.0 TFSI engine is available in two versions: 110 kW (150 PS) and 150 kW (204 PS). The 110 kW variant features a turbocharged engine with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and a modified combustion process for efficiency. The 150 kW version also includes VTG and is available with front-wheel drive or quattro ultra.
- 2.0 TDI: This engine delivers 150 kW (204 PS) and benefits from MHEV plus technology, optimizing fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. It features a smooth-running combustion process and a 48-volt starter generator for improved agility and comfort.
- Audi S5: The sporty 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine produces 270 kW (367 PS) with VTG and MHEV plus technology. It includes a revised S tronic dual-clutch transmission, which enhances agility and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 14 g/km compared to the previous S4 Sedan TDI. The S5 features a quattro sport differential and adjustable all-wheel drive clutch for exceptional lateral dynamics.
Each engine and drivetrain option is designed to meet varying customer expectations, offering a balance of performance, efficiency, and driving pleasure.
Dynamic Design of Cassis and Steering
The new Audi A5 excels in driving dynamics thanks to advancements in its suspension and steering systems. It offers precise, effortless handling with a neutral feel. The optional adaptive dampers allow a clear distinction between comfort and sportiness. Additionally, the progressive steering has been significantly refined for greater precision.
